Tietovarastointia esitettiin liiketoiminnalle “mahdollistavana” teknologiana, jonka avulla saatiin aikaiseksi paljon sellaisia asioita, joita pelkillä raportointivälineillä ei oltu onnistuttu siihen asti kunnollisesti rakentamaan.

Muistan itsekin, kuinka Kööpenhaminassa vuonna 2000 SAP:in kaverit hillitysti hiiltyivät, kun Bill Inmon esityksessään arvosteli, ettei SAP:in tietoarkkitehtuuri (BIW) täytä tietovarastoinnin tunnusmerkkejä. However, I will only return to the years 1997-2000. The idea of this post was born when I went through the old archived webpages TDWI Finland from the early days. In Finland, we had a tough DW boom, and all the seminars on this topic were full. At the same time, TDWI also aroused great enthusiasm for BI professionals in Finland. Also, customer organizations were eagerly engaged in, at least the biggest of them which significantly developed data warehouses and business intelligence. Data warehousing was presented as an enabling technology for the business, which brought about a number of things that had not been successfully built up by the reporting tools until then.

At the same time, more attention was paid to information architectures. The information architectural discussions were sometimes hot, as so-called ‘real and false’ ways of thinking and doing things were born. I remember myself how a couple of SAP people in Copenhagen in 2000 got a little bit frustrated when Bill Inmon in his performance criticized that SAP’s BIW data architecture didn’t fulfill the characteristics of data warehouse. And finally, Bill threatened to remove the guys from the hall when the back row protests only continued and continued. At that time, Bill and his partners developed the Corporate Information Factory concept, where data warehouses and datamarts, near line storage and secondary storage, and operational storages (ODS) found their place and mission. For concept developers this was a golden time. This was also a golden time for seminar organizers and professionals, too.

You can now make your own findings of these materials, programs and presentations that I’ve put together on our website http://www.tdwi.fi/tapahtumia-events/tapahtumia-alkutaipaleelta/. – Stockholm 1997, Stockholm 1998, Helsinki 1998, Copenhagen 2000.

In our seminars, trainings and presentations were held by top industry names such as W.H.
