15:30 (Helsinki time) – James Serra – Deciphering Data Architectures – choosing between a Modern Data Warehouse, Data Fabric, Data Lakehouse, and Data Mesh

Data fabric, data lakehouse, and data mesh have recently appeared as viable alternatives to the modern data warehouse. These new architectures have solid benefits, but they’re also surrounded by a lot of hyperbole and confusion. In this presentation James will give you a guided tour of each architecture to help you understand its pros and cons. He will also examine common data architecture concepts, including data warehouses and data lakes. You’ll learn what data lakehouses can help you achieve, and how to distinguish data mesh hype from reality. Best of all, you’ll be able to determine the most appropriate data architecture for your needs. And he will finish with discussing Microsoft’s version of the data mesh. The content is derived from his book “Deciphering Data Architectures: Choosing Between a Modern Data Warehouse, Data Fabric, Data Lakehouse, and Data Mesh“.

James Serra works at Microsoft as a big data and data warehousing solution architect where he has been for most of the last ten years. He is a thought leader in the use and application of Big Data and advanced analytics, including data architectures such as the modern data warehouse, data lakehouse, data fabric, and data mesh. He is a prior SQL Server MVP with nearly 40 years of IT experience. He is a popular blogger (JamesSerra.com) and speaker, having presented at dozens of major events. He is the author of the book “Deciphering Data Architectures: Choosing Between a Modern Data Warehouse, Data Fabric, Data Lakehouse, and Data Mesh”.

Larry Burns is a specialist in the field of Data and Database Management. In his 40-year career as a data architect, data modeler, database developer, consultant and teacher, he has developed an extensive repertoire of tools, techniques, and expertise that enables businesses to more easily reuse their data and derive maximum value from their databases. Larry has a background in application development, and has contributed significantly to the success of many major projects. Larry is also involved in teaching, lecturing and writing on various topics of database management and application development and Agile Development.

Larry Burns is the author of the books “Building The Agile Database” (Technics Publications, 2011), “Growing Business Intelligence” (Technics Publications, 2016) and “Data Model Storytelling” (Technics Publications, 2021) and wrote a feature column for TDAN.com from 2005 to 2013. He was also a contributing author to DAMA International’s Data Management Body of Knowledge (DAMA-DMBOK), and an instructor and advisor in the University of Washington’s certificate program in Data Resource Management.

In this talk, Ole will first talk about data catalogs, what they are and how they work with metadata. Then, Ole will contextualize this to a broader perspective of metadata management in general and give a sneak peak of his proposed decentralized architecture for metadata – the meta grid.

Ole Olesen-Bagneux is currently writing Fundamentals of Metadata Management, (O’Reilly, 2025). The book describes a large subset of the metadata repositories that look at the IT-Landscape and provides a unique key to use metadata to document, understand and control your IT landscape. That key is the Meta Grid. Previously, Ole wrote The Enterprise Data Catalog, (O’Reilly, 2023) – that was top-rated, praised by industries, technologies and thought leaders worldwide. Ole consults via his company Searching for Data.

Panos Alexopoulos – Semantic Data Modeling and Knowledge Graphs in the era of Large Language Models – Opportunities and Challenges.

In an era dominated by the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), the role of traditional semantic data modeling and knowledge engineering faces a transformative moment. While LLMs are proficient in processing and generating natural language at scale, the structured, interconnected approach of ontologies and knowledge graphs remains critical for managing complex, entity-rich data. This talk will explore the evolving interplay between LLMs and knowledge graphs, emphasizing how each can complement the other: LLMs can enhance knowledge graph development by assisting in schema design, knowledge extraction, and quality assurance, while knowledge graphs offer LLMs a foundation to improve accuracy and reduce hallucinations. We will examine both the opportunities and challenges of this synergy, outlining practical strategies for getting the best of the two worlds.

Panos Alexopoulos has been working since 2006 at the intersection of data, semantics and software, contributing in building intelligent systems that deliver value to business and society. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Panos currently works as a principal educator at OWLTECH, developing and delivering training workshops that provide actionable knowledge and insights for data and AI practitioners. He also works as Head of Ontology at Textkernel BV, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, leading a team of data professionals in developing and delivering a large cross-lingual Knowledge Graph in the HR and Recruitment domain.

Panos has published several papers at international conferences, journals and books, and he is a regular speaker in both academic and industry venues. He is also the author of the O’Reilly book “Semantic Modeling for Data – Avoiding Pitfalls and Dilemmas”, a practical and pragmatic field guide for data practitioners that want to learn how semantic data modeling is applied in the real world.

Joe Reis, a “recovering data scientist” with 20 years in the data industry, is the co-author of the best-selling O’Reilly book, “Fundamentals of Data Engineering.” He’s also the instructor for the wildly popular Data Engineering Professional Certificate on Coursera, in partnership with DeepLearning.ai and AWS.

Joe’s extensive experience encompasses data engineering, data architecture, machine learning, and more. He regularly keynotes major data conferences globally, advises and invests in innovative data product companies, writes at Practical Data Modeling and his personal blog, and hosts the popular data podcasts “The Monday Morning Data Chat” and “The Joe Reis Show.” In his free time, Joe is dedicated to writing new books and articles, and thinking of ways to advance the data industry.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business is about more than just applying advanced technology to make things more efficient. It’s about building trust, ethics, and responsibility into our digital systems. As AI becomes more involved in making decisions, ensuring that it is trustworthy becomes crucial. Trustworthy AI is not a feature to be added after development but a comprehensive approach that begins even before the first line of code. This presentation will cover the key ideas behind Trustworthy AI, how it supports the integrity and sustainability of organizations, as well as
strategies for maintaining trust in an AI- driven world.

Josefin, Principal Trustworthy AI specialist at SAS Institute, has for the past 20 years been deeply involved in AI and advanced analytics providing strategic guidance to organizations across various industries on how to derive insights and value from data using AI. She recently transitioned from her role as Nordic Head of AI into a global role as Principal Trustworthy AI Specialist with SAS Data Ethics Practice, guiding the company’s responsible innovation strategy and helping organizations implement AI that promote human well-being, agency and equity. Josefin holds a doctoral degree from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Uppsala University in Chemometrics.

Anna-Mari työskenteli valtiovarainministeriössä tekoälyn yhteiskunnallisiin liittyvien kysymysten parissa erityisasiantuntijana 2019 – 2024. Hän osallistui valtioneuvostossa mm. tekoälyasetuksen (EU AI ACT) sekä sen kansallisen toimeenpanon valmisteluun (31.7.2024 asti). Anna-Marilla on lisäksi hyvä kokonaiskuva EU:n digisääntelystä, ja hän pohtii siihen liittyviä kysymyksiä myös tutkijana.

Tällä hetkellä Anna-Mari työskentelee Helsingin yliopistossa, jossa hän tutkii mm. tekoälysääntelyn lisäksi myös lisääntyvän algoritmien hyödyntämisen vaikutuksia demokratian tulevaisuuteen, generatiiviseen tekoälyyn liittyviä kysymyksiä, sekä ihmisen ja koneen välistä tiedollista vuorovaikutusta. Hän vastaa myös tekoälyyn liittyvien yhteiskunnallisten ja filosofisten kysymysten opetuksesta digitaalisten ihmistieteiden osastolla. Anna-Mari on HY:n kansainvälisessä levityksessä olevan Ethics of AI- moocin päätekijä, sekä kehittänyt aihepiiriin liittyvää korkeakouluopetusta Suomessa.

Säästöpankin datamatka – Zero to Hero.

Kerromme Säästöpankin datamatkan siitä, kun ei ollut mitään siihen, kun modernin dataratkaisun päältä tuotetaan liiketoimintahyöty ennustavan analytiikan, raportoinnin sekä lukuisten tiedonvälityspisteiden avulla. Matkaan on mahtunut useita mutkia, mutta myös paljon oppeja miten ja mitä kannattaa tehdä organisoitumisesta alkaen. Esityksessä paneudumme myös tarkemmalla ja teknisellä tasolla ennustavan analytiikan ratkaisuumme.

Esityksen pitävät Jyri Mustonen, Jarkko Utter ja Lasse Ruokolainen

Jyri toimii johtajana data ja analytiikka -alueella. Hän on data-alueen monitoimimies vuosien kokemuksella tietovarastoinnista, raportoinnista ja tiedon hyödyntämisestä liiketoiminnan tarpeisiin. Säästöpankissa Jyrin tehtävänä on luotsata data & analytiikka -tiimi huimiin suorituksiin samalla parantaen ryhmän kykyä hyödyntää dataa.

Jarkko toimii senior data-analyytikkona. Hän on ratkaisukeskeinen analyytikko 15 vuoden kokemuksella pankkialalta. Jarkko ottaa mielellään innovaattorin ja varhaisen omaksujan haasteet ja roolin nauttien luodessaan uutta. Jarko on asiantuntija, kun on kyse pankkien toimintatavoista, tuotteista ja analytiikan tarpeista. Säästöpankissa Jarkon tehtävänä on tuottaa analyysit liiketoiminnalle, asiakasymmärryksen kasvattaminen ja ennustavan analytiikan tuotannon ohjaus.

Lasse toimii principal data scientistina ja full-stack data science konsulttina. Hän nauttii ongelmien ratkaisusta ja tehokkaiden ja skaalautuvien koneoppimisratkaisujen kehittämisestä. Lassella on kokemusta monenlaisista projekteista eri toimialoilta kuten esimerkiksi maatalous, finanssiala, valmistava teollisuus ja terveydenhuolto. Säästöpankissa Lassen tehtävänä on ennustemallien ja koneoppimisinfrastruktuurin kehittäminen ja tuotannollistaminen.

Usein data ja erityisesti tietovarastointi nähdään tapana tuottaa päätöksentekoa tukevaa raportointia ja parhaimmillaan edistynyttä analytiikkaa. Tietovarastoinnilla rakennettu laadukas ja liiketoiminnan ohjauksessa oleva data voi kuitenkin olla vielä paljon tätä enemmän: se voi olla koko organisaation it-ratkaisun ydin. Se on parhaimmillaan organisaation tietovarantojen sydän, joka pumppaa tietoa eri tarpeisiin niin tietotuotteisiin ja -palveluihin kuin myös eri järjestelmiin ja niiden yhteisiin tietotarpeisiin.

Tällainen holistinen näkemys tietovarastointiin edellyttää näkemyksellisyyttä, ennakkoluulottomuutta ja vahvaa johtamiskykyä eri tasoilla, mutta odotettavissa olevat hyödyt ovat tämän vaivan arvoisia.

Kokenut tietovarastoinnin ja tietohallinnon kehittäjä ja johtaja Jari Ylinen kertoo tällaisesta tietovarastoinnista ja datanhallinnasta osana organisaation it-ratkaisuja. Hän on Ari Hovi -yhtiön toimitusjohtaja toimien tietojohtamisen johdon konsulttina ja kouluttajana.

Datan ja koneoppimisen hyödyntäminen operatiiviseen päätöksentekoon vaatii kokonaisvaltaista ymmärrystä liiketoimintaprosesseista, käyttäjistä ja teknologiasta – eli tuoteajattelua. Operatiivista päätöksentekoa tukevat data- ja koneoppimisjärjestelmät ovat paljon enemmän kuin yksittäisiä malleja ja koostuvat usein monista eri osista.

Esimerkkinä Pekka käy läpi kuinka tuotantoketjun täydennysprosessia voidaan optimoida kysyntäennusteiden, optimoinnin ja simuloinnin avulla.

Pekalla on yli 15 vuoden kokemus datan, analytiikan ja koneoppimisen hyödyntämisestä päätöksenteon parantamisessa. Hän toimii data science konsulttina auttaen organisaatioita luomaan liiketoiminta-arvoa datasta.

David Plotkin – Using data domains for Data Governance

As your data governance and data stewardship effort matures, you will begin to hear more and more about the use of “data domains” as an effective means of managing and governing your data and managing it with a team of stakeholders. It is important to understand how using data domains works differently from the older methods of grouping data by line of business, what important problems with that older approach it solves, and why data domains require a robust and mature data governance effort. In this presentation you will learn:

  • What data domains are and what purpose they serve
  • How to determine an effective data domain hierarchy
  • How to establish ownership from all stakeholders across the enterprise for each data domain
  • The staffing and roles for managing data domains effectively
  • How the decision-making process works for metadata that is grouped into data domains.
  • How the data stewardship organization for a data domain is managed
  • Why data domain-based data stewardship really needs a robust and mature data governance effort.

David has over 30 years of experience in Data Governance, data modeling, metadata, and data quality. He has led efforts at employers and client companies to plan and implement Data Governance both as stand-alone efforts and as part of other initiatives such as Data Quality improvement and Master Data Management. He has previously managed Data Governance at two insurance companies and managed data quality at two large banks. He serves as a subject matter expert on many topics around metadata, data governance, and data quality.

Stephen Brobst – Generative AI: What is it and Why Should You Care?

Artificial Intelligence has reached a new plateau of capability with the advent of Generative AI. The field of Artificial Intelligence has been around for many decades and has experienced multiple cycles of hype peaks characterized by unreasonable expectation of life-changing capability as well as troughs of disillusionment where confidence in its value proposition have been severely questioned (“AI Winters”). This talk will discuss why we should be paying attention to Generative AI – for both its amazing possibilities as well as its potential pitfalls. This discussion will explain, in plain terms, why Generative AI is different than previous instantiations of AI technology and how we can harness these capabilities for practical uses to deliver business value.

Stephen is the CTO for Teradata. He performed his graduate work in computer science at MIT where his Masters and PhD research focused on high-performance parallel processing. He also completed an MBA with joint course and thesis work at the Harvard Business School and the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has dozens of patents and hundreds of publications in the areas of data management and machine learning. Stephen is a TDWI Fellow and has been on the faculty of The Data Warehousing Institute since 1996. During Barack Obama’s first term he was appointed to the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) where he worked on development of the Big Data strategy for the US government. Ellie on toiminut liiketoimintalähtöisen tietomallinnuksen sanansaattajana jo viitisen vuotta ja laajentanut asiakaskuntaansa maailmalla voimakkaasti etenkin viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. Tarve liiketoiminnan datatarpeiden ymmärtämiselle ja tuon ymmärryksen kääntämiselle tekniseksi implementaatioksi on valtava ympäri maailman.

Tässä esityksessä käydään läpi meillä ja maailmalla nähtyjä käyttötapauksia ja ratkaisuja, joissa tietomallintaminen on keskeisessä osassa. Datatarpeiden laajentuessa kaikkialle on myös tietomallintamisen hyödyntämisalue laajentunut kauas yli perinteisen tietovarastoinnin, joten perehdymme myös liiketoimintalähtöisen mallintamisen muutamaan tärkeään perussääntöön, joilla mallintaminen erilaisissa hankkeissa ja organisaatioissa onnistuu ja joilla malleilla saadaan myös ohjattua teknistä implementaatiotyötä.

DSharp on liiketoiminnan käsitemallista luotavan tietovarastoinnin edelläkävijä. Olemme tehostaneet mallipohjaisen tietovaraston tekemistä, ja näin pystymme projekteissa panostamaan perinteistä tietoalustaprojektia enemmän asiakkaan tavoitteisiin ja mittareihin.

Esityksessämme näytämme, kuinka kehittämämme ohjelmiston D# Enginen avulla luodaan ketterästi tietovarasto käsitemallista.

Tietovaraston tekeminen aloitetaan menetelmässämme tiedon, tavoitteiden ja tietolähteiden kartoittamisella yhdessä asiakkaan kanssa. Seuraavaksi luodaan käsitemalli ja kohdennetaan data käsitemalliin. D# Engine luo tietovaraston tehdyn käsitemallin pohjalta

Generoituja pilvipalveluratkaisuja – valmiusaste yli 50 %

Tietojärjestelmät tulevat ajoittain elinkaarensa päähän ja ajoittain tulee tarve uusille tietojärjestelmille. Tietojärjestelmien tekemisen tapa on kehittynyt vesiputousmaisesta toiminnasta ketterään kehitykseen – samaan aikaan ovat kehittyneet myös tekemisen työvälineet toimistotyökaluista koodi- ja resurssigeneraattoreihin. Esityksen jälkeiseen keskusteluun osallistuvat myös LeBlanc Oy:stä Janne Hansen ja Petri Savolainen.

Valtiokonttorissa kehitetään ketterästi ja viedään palveluita pilveen. Pilvimatkalla tarvitaan monesti rohkeutta kokeilla uutta ja ottaa joskus hallittuja riskejäkin, mutta toisinaan sovelluskehitykseen voi saada inspiraatiota myös vanhoista hyvistä malleista ja menetelmistä. Uusi esimerkkiratkaisumme palvelun pilveistyksestä, viranomaisvaatimusten mukaiseksi mallinnettu RRP-pilvipalveluratkaisu, syntyi mallinnustyökalun avulla yhdeksässä kuukaudessa – kuin liukuhihnalta.

Virpi Hotti on johtava asiantuntija Valtiokonttorin Tietohallinnossa. Hän vastaa mallikeskeisten työvälineiden, kuten LeBlanc, kehityskoordinoinnista ja tukee toimialoja erilaisissa kehittämistehtävissä ideasta jatkuvaan palvelutuotantoon. Virpin erityisosaamisalueena on erityisesti tiedonhallinnan tietoaineistojen monipuolinen hyödyntäminen.

Robert S. Seiner – How to Select the Appropriate Approach to Data Governance

There are three approaches organizations take to deliver effective Data Governance programs. The term “Data Governance” implies complexity, power, and control. Therefore, the approach that an organization takes heavily influences how the organization perceives Data Governance, and what it takes to successfully build and sustain your program. This session with Bob Seiner will change the way you look at Data Governance.

Robert (Bob) S. Seiner is the President and Principal of KIK Consulting & Educational Services (KIKconsulting.com) and the Publisher of The Data Administration Newsletter (TDAN.com). Seiner is a thought-leader in the fields of data governance and metadata management. KIK (which stands for “knowledge is king”) offers consulting, mentoring and educational services focused on Non-Invasive Data GovernanceTM, data stewardship, data management and metadata management solutions. Seiner is the author of the industry’s top selling book on data governance – Non-Invasive Data Governance: The Path of Least Resistance and Greatest Success (Technics Publications 2014) and has hosted the popular monthly webinar series on data governance called Real-World Data Governance (w Dataversity) since 2012. Seiner’s book has been translated into five languages (Dutch, Italian, French, German, Spanish) with two other languages (Chinese and Arabic) on the near horizon. Seiner also holds the position of Adjunct Faculty and Instructor for the Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College CDataO post-graduate program. KIK Consulting is celebrating its 20th year in business while TDAN.com has been actively published for 25 years.
