Irina Steenbeek – Building your successful data lineage case in 9 steps

In this presentation, Irina explains a method for designing, scoping, and implementing a data lineage business case.

Many companies have added data lineage to their agenda during the last few years. Still, the implementation of data lineage experiences a lot of challenges. The most critical ones are:

  • Data lineage remains an abstract concept for many users.
  • The implementation of data lineage is complex and time- and resource-consuming.
  • Even if implemented, data management and business professionals don’t use it as expected.

To anticipate these challenges, we present a method that allows:

  • Designing the metamodel of data lineage that fits the company’s needs and resources.
  • Scoping and implementing a data lineage project.
  • Managing various challenges with the usage of data lineage outcomes.

The presentation is based on the newly published book “Data Lineage from a Business Perspective” by Irina Steenbeek.

Dr. Irina Steenbeek is a data management practitioner. The key areas of her professional expertise are the implementation of data management frameworks in mid-sized companies and data lineage. Additionally, Irina has practical experience in software implementation such as ERP and DWH/BI, management consultation, financial and business controls, and data science.

Throughout the years, she has worked for global institutions as well as large- and medium-sized organizations in different sectors, including but not limited to financial institutions, professional services, and IT companies. In 2016, she founded Data Crossroads – a training and coaching services enterprise in the area of data management.

Irina is a strong believer that the success of data management initiatives is based on the combination of a pragmatic approach, clear and transparent methodology, and time. She has shared her approach and implementation experience by publishing the “Orange” Model of Data Management, The Data Management Toolkit and The Data Management Cookbook. She is also the author of various white-papers and articles on the topic of data management.

The latest book Irina published is from 2021, Data Lineage from a business perspective.

Danette McGilvray – Business Value – Where Data and Quality Meet

Our world is enamored with technology. Yet without data, technology is an empty shell.  Without high-quality data, organizations will fall short of what they want to accomplish – or fail completely. It is not unusual to find that data quality issues and lack of basic data literacy prevent organizations from realizing the full benefits from their investments in business processes and systems. Worst case they can cause real harm.

Join Danette for this presentation which includes

  • What’s ahead for data – highlights from the Wall Street Journal’s The Future of Everything Series
  • Just any data is not enough – only high-quality data will allow the promises of technology to be truly fulfilled
  • The Ten Steps™ approach to high-quality data – a practical how-to methodology for any organization
  • What all this means for you and where you work

An internationally respected expert, Danette McGilvray, is known for her Ten Steps™ approach, used by multiple industries as a proven method for increasing the value of data through quality and governance. It applies to operational processes and also to focused initiatives such as security, analytics, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data science, and compliance. Danette guides leaders and staff as they connect business strategy to practical steps for implementation.  As president and principal of Granite Falls Consulting, Inc., she is committed to appropriate and effective use of technology, while not endorsing any specific tool or vendor. She also emphasizes the human aspect of data management through communication, change management, etc.

Danette is the author of Executing Data Quality Projects: Ten Steps to Quality Data and Trusted Information™, 2nd Ed. (Elsevier/Academic Press, 2021). The first edition (2008) is often described as a “classic” or noted as one of the “top ten” data management books in social media conversations. Dave Wells – The Data Literacy Imperative – Developing Individual and Organizational Literacy

It seems that everyone is talking about data literacy today. CDOs position literacy among their top priorities and many organizations count it among their pressing needs. The level of awareness is high. The puzzle is in what comes after awareness. How do you create data literacy? Where to start and how to grow data literacy?

Data literacy is both an individual and an organizational skill set. A data literate individual has the ability to understand, interpret, and apply data to fulfill communication responsibilities of their specific job role. A data literate organization has the ability to communicate, collaborate, and innovate using data. Data literacy growth occurs on both fronts. Individually you need learning plans. Organizationally you need a data literacy program. And it all begins with assessment.

25-January the presentation was meant to go through the points listed below, but for technical reasons Dave lost connection 55 minutes from the start of the presentation. Now, 10-February, Dave will do a quick summary of the early part of the presentation (25-Jan) — what, why, who of data literacy — then pick up at the start of Building a Data Literacy Program.

  • The Data Literacy Body of Knowledge (DLBOK)
  • The activities and dimensions of a Data Literacy Program
  • Data literacy assessment and using assessment results
  • Individual and organizational planning
  • Learning resources for data literacy
  • Sustaining, expanding, and evolving data literacy

Please, take eLearningCurve’s free Data Literacy Assessment prior to attending the session. You’ll gain some insights that help you to personalize the information and engage in a lively and interactive session.

Dave Wells is the Education Director for eLearningCurve as well as the author and instructor of several eLearningCurve courses. Dave works as an educator and consultant in the field of data and information management. He has more than 50 years of experience working with data and technology in many roles including application development, data architecture, data governance, IT management, business management, technology research, and more. Dave also has more than 30 years of experience as an information management and information technology educator including curriculum management, instructional design, course development, and teaching in live classroom, virtual, and e-learning formats. See Dave’s blog at eckerson.com to read his thoughts about a variety of data and information management topics.

Learn the secret of how to transform textual unstructured data to a structured database, so that your organization can gain deeper insights by bringing unstructured data to the forefront of decision-making processes. –

Maximize the business value locked away in textual data –

Textual ETL transforms unstructured data into a format compatible with existing business intelligence infrastructure. Read, integrate, and prepare unstructured data ready to go into standard db technologies. Once the unstructured data resides in bd, standard analytical tools and BI visualization technologies can be used to access, analyze, and present unstructured data. When the transition is made from an unstructured to a structured environment, you can then apply Textual ETL to conduct robust sentiment, and non-sentiment analysis, across large volumes of information efficiently.
